Garlic - The Hidden Gem
Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used medicinally since ancient times in civilizations such as ancient Egypt, Babylon, Greece, and Rome. It was valued for its potential health benefits and was used to treat a variety of ailments, including infections, digestive issues, and respiratory problems.
Garlic was highly esteemed in ancient Egyptian society. It was not only consumed as a food but also used for medicinal purposes and religious rituals. Garlic bulbs were placed in tombs as offerings to the deceased, and it was believed to provide strength and endurance to workers, including the builders of the pyramids.
Garlic gained popularity as a medicinal remedy during World War I and World War II when it was used to prevent infections and promote healing among soldiers. Its antiseptic properties were valued, and it was often used topically to disinfect wounds.
How Garlic Prevent Cancer?
Garlic compounds, particularly allicin, can interfere with the orderly progression of cancer cell division, stopping them at specific stages (cell cycle arrest) and triggering programmed cell death.
Garlic may enhance enzymes that help detoxify carcinogens and repair DNA damage caused by free radicals, potentially preventing cancer initiation. Garlic contains antioxidants that combat the damaging effects of free radicals, which can contribute to cancer development.
Chronic inflammation is linked to cancer. Garlic's anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce cancer risk. Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels, which tumors need for growth. Garlic may have anti-angiogenic properties, hindering tumor progression.
What Did The research Say?
Researchers followed a large group of 58,508 participants in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening for 12 years. The study found that moderate dietary garlic consumption was significantly associated with a reduced risk of overall colorectal cancer in men.
A meta-analysis which included 19 case control and 2 cohort studies showed that consumption of high levels of allium vegetables reduced the risk of gastric cancer.
A population based study with 471 male subjects showed that high consumption of allium vegetables was associated with a risk reduction of prostate cancer.
Things to consider
Garlic contains compounds such as allicin, which have been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation which means that garlic may help prevent the formation of blood clots by interfering with the clotting process.
If you are taking oral anticoagulants or blood thinners, such as warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, and apixaban, it may intensify the blood thinning effects and increase the risk of bleeding. Please consult with your healthcare provider.
