Curcumin

Curcumin may help improve joint mobility and function by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Studies suggest that curcumin may help alleviate pain associated with RA, potentially reducing the need for pain medications.
Curcumin may help modulate the immune system, potentially decreasing the autoimmune response that contributes to RA.
What did the research say?
A randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of curcumin in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis. Forty-five rheumatoid arthritis patients were randomized to receive 500mg curcumin, 50mg diclofenac sodium plus 500mg curcumin and 50mg diclofenac sodium respectively.
Patients in all treatment groups showed significant changes in Disease Activity Scores. However, the curcumin group showed the highest percentage of improvement in overall Disease Activity Score and reduction in tenderness and swelling of joint than the diclofenac sodium group alone. The study concluded that curcumin was safe and had no adverse effects.
A meta-analysis study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of curcumin in rheumatoid arthritis patients. The assessment included erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, disease activity score, rheumatoid factor, pain score, tender joint count and swollen joint count.
The curcumin group showed improvement in inflammation levels and clinical symptoms compared to the placebo group. The authors concluded that curcumin was beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis treatment.
