5 Simple Ways to Manage Rheumatoid Arthritis Naturally - Part I
The Rheumatoid Arthritis Secrets You're Not Supposed To Know
Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition that primarily affects the joints. In RA, the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium, which is the lining of the joints.
This causes inflammation in the affected joints, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness. Over time, the inflammation can damage the cartilage and bone within the joint, potentially leading to joint deformities and loss of function.
Why would the immune system attack the body?
Leaky gut syndrome, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a concept used to describe a condition where the lining of the gut becomes more porous than normal.
This increased permeability allows substances such as undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria to pass through the gut lining and enter the bloodstream, triggering the immune system to target its own body.
Natural Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Fish Oil
Fish Oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are not known for their anti-inflammatory properties. It contains two key omega-3s: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). While our bodies can convert an essential fatty acid called ALA into EPA and DHA, the efficiency of this conversion is often limited.
The ideal ratio for omega-3/omega-6 fatty acid in the body is 1:1 to 1:3 which is associated with signifant reduction in mortality of heart diseases.
Based on the current research, a typical modern diet ratio is 1:15 to 1:16.7. Modern diets are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and have excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids.
For patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a ratio of 1:2 to 1:3 suppressed inflammation. A ratio of 1:4 was associated with a 70% decrease in total mortality of cardiovascular disease. A ratio of 1:2 reduced metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer. In addition, ratio of 1:5 had a beneficial effect on patients with asthma.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D receptors are found at high density on T and B cells, dendritic cells and macrophages which help to modulate the immune system. These white blood cells rely on adequate vitamin D to function properly.
Adding vitamin D to certain immune cells (CD4+ T cells) helps reduce inflammation. It does this by lowering levels of a protein called IL-6, which is important for activating other immune cells that can contribute to autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D also reduces the production of harmful antibodies by another type of immune cell (B cells) which help control inflammation.
What did the research say?
Fish Oil
A meta-analysis study of 17 randomized controlled clinical trials was conducted to evaluate the analgesic effects of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation for inflammatory joint pain. The study concluded that omega-3 fatty acids supplementation is an attractive adjunctive treatment for joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and dysmenorrhea.
Another trial with 250 patients was conducted in a neurosurgical practice using fish oil supplementation for pain relief. Of the 250 patients, 125 questionnaires were returned. Seventy-eight percent of the patients were taking 1200 mg of fish oil and 22% were taking 2400 mg of fish oil. Fifty-nine percent discontinued to take prescription NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) medications for pain.
Sixty percent of the patients stated that their overall pain was improved and 60% stated that their joint pain had improved. Eighty percent stated that they were satisfied with their improvement and 88% stated that they would continue to take fish oil.
The results showed that omega-3 fatty acids demonstrated equivalent effects as ibuprofen in reducing arthritic pain. The authors concluded that omega-3 fatty acids supplementation is a safe alternative to NSAIDS for treatment of nonsurgical neck or back pain in selective group.
Vitamin D
A VITAL randomized controlled trial was conducted in Harvard Medical School to investigate if vitamin D and marine derived long chain omega 3 acids reduce the risk of autoimmune disease. 25, 871 participants with autoimmune disease were enrolled in the clinical trial. The study concluded that vitamin D supplementation for five years with or without omega 3 fatty acids decreased autoimmune disease by 22%.
Although the study showed that vitamin D supplementation alone can reduce autoimmune disease, the combination of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids may have a synergistic effect in reducing inflammation.
