The Relationship Between Solar Activity and COVID-19: An Analysis of Sunspots, Solar Flares, and Pandemic Emergence

Solar activity particularly sunspots and solar flares plays a significant role in influencing cosmic ray intensity and Earth’s atmospheric conditions. High solar activity leads to increased emissions of matter and electromagnetic fields from the Sun, which can hinder cosmic rays from penetrating Earth’s atmosphere.
Conversely, during periods of low solar activity, cosmic ray intensity rises, potentially contributing to viral mutations and the emergence of new pathogens.
The study examines the correlation between sunspot activity and global pandemics including COVID-19, by analyzing historical data from 1750 to 2020.
Sunspots and Solar Flares: Definitions and Effects
Sunspots are dark, cooler regions on the Sun’s surface caused by intense magnetic activity. These areas often give rise to solar flares which is a powerful bursts of radiation resulting from the release of magnetic energy. Solar flares are classified by strength, ranging from A-class (weakest) to X-class (strongest), with each category representing a tenfold increase in energy output.
Solar flares can last from minutes to hours and are frequently accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which expel solar material into space. When these CMEs interact with Earth’s magnetosphere, they can trigger geomagnetic storms disrupting radio communications, power grids, and navigation systems. For example, sunspot region AR4114 recently produced an X1.3 flare on June 17, 2025 causing a radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean.

The cyclical variation of cosmic rays reaching Earth is closely linked to solar activity. Every 11 years, solar activity diminishes leading to an increase in cosmic ray flux. During periods of minimal sunspot activity, the Sun’s magnetic field weakens allowing high energy cosmic particles to penetrate Earth’s atmosphere. These particles collide with atmospheric atoms producing secondary particles that may influence viral mutations.
Research suggests that solar activity extremes such as both maxima and minima can significantly impact Earth’s climate, leading to extreme temperatures, precipitation shifts, and severe weather conditions.
Such environmental changes may indirectly affect interspecies interactions, facilitating zoonotic spillover events.
Zoonotic spillover refers to the transmission of pathogens from non-human animals to humans, which can result in the emergence of new infectious diseases. This phenomenon is a critical factor in the appearance of many human infectious diseases, with approximately 60-75% of human infectious diseases originating from pathogens that initially circulated in non-human animal species.

Mechanisms Linking Solar Activity to Pandemics

Three primary molecular mechanisms may explain how solar and cosmic rays contribute to viral evolution:

Point Mutations: High energy particles may induce genetic drifts in RNA viruses, leading to minor but cumulative changes.
Gene Recombination: Ultraviolet and gamma radiation can facilitate genetic reassortment, generating novel viral strains.
External Virion Transport: Variations in Earth’s electromagnetic environment, influenced by solar winds, may enable the transport of exogenous viral particles from the stratosphere to the surface.

Notably, most influenza pandemics since 1918 have involved recombinant strains, suggesting that solar induced mutations and cross species transmission play a critical role in viral emergence.

Researchers employs wavelet decomposition to analyze sunspot cycles and their correlation with major pandemics. The dataset, sourced from the Solar Influences Data Analysis Center (SIDC), reveals that 27 out of 36 major pandemics occurred near sunspot extrema. Key findings include:

The COVID-19 pandemic emerged during a sunspot minimum in 2019.
Previous outbreaks, including MERS, Ebola, Swine Flu, and SARS, coincided with solar maxima or minima.
Geographic analysis indicates that pandemics frequently originate in regions spanning China, West Africa, and the United States.

Forecasting Future Pandemics Using Multi-Step Autoregression (MSAR)

Using MSAR modeling, this study projects pandemic risks over the next 110 years (approximately 10 solar cycles). Results indicate that while solar minima exhibit low amplitude fluctuations, maxima display higher variance, suggesting periodic increases in pandemic likelihood. The model also highlights that future outbreaks may follow historical geographic patterns, with East Asia, West Africa, and North America remaining high risk zones.

Conclusion

The study establishes a compelling correlation between solar activity and pandemic emergence, suggesting that sunspot extrema may contribute to viral mutations through cosmic ray fluctuations and electromagnetic effects.
Historical data from 1750 to 2020 reveal that major pandemics including COVID-19, frequently align with solar maxima or minima. The proposed MSAR model forecasts future pandemic risks emphasizing the need for further experimental research to validate these astrophysical-biological interactions.
