FDA Cancels Key Flu Vaccine Meeting: What It Means for You
The FDA has scrapped a major meeting to decide which flu strains will go into next season’s vaccine, raising questions about timing and safety.
The FDA’s vaccine advisory group (VRBPAC) was set to meet on March 13 to pick flu strains for the 2025-26 Northern Hemisphere vaccines. But the meeting was abruptly canceled, leaving experts concerned about delays in vaccine production. The FDA has not explained why, but insists next season’s shots will still be ready on time.
Why It Matters
Flu vaccines take about six months to produce, so timing is critical. Without clear guidance, manufacturers could face delays, potentially risking vaccine availability. The Infectious Diseases Society of America warns this could cost lives if vaccines are not ready in time.
World Health Organization (WHO)
While the FDA’s meeting is canceled, the WHO is still on track to announce its recommended flu strains for the Northern Hemisphere. Typically, the FDA aligns with the WHO’s choices, so their decision will likely guide U.S. vaccine production. This global coordination ensures vaccines target the most threatening flu strains worldwide.
Bigger Picture
This is not the only vaccine-related meeting canceled recently. A CDC advisory meeting was also postponed, and a major oral COVID vaccine trial was paused.
Critics worry these moves reflect a broader shift in federal vaccine policy, especially amid one of the worst flu seasons in over a decade. So far this season, the CDC reports 430,000 hospitalizations and 19,000 flu-related deaths.
People are speculated that the meeting’s cancellation is due to the recent confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
