Silent Killer? How Roundup’s Glyphosate May Be Damaging Your Body
Discover how glyphosate affects your brain health, gut microbiome & cancer risks
Understanding Glyphosate: Usage, Human Health Impact, and Environmental Concerns
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the widely used herbicide Roundup, is a broad-spectrum, non-selective herbicide that kills most plant species. Its mechanism involves inhibiting a specific enzyme pathway known as the shikimic acid pathway, which is essential for plant growth and survival.
While this pathway exists in plants and some microorganisms, it is absent in mammals, leading to initial assumptions that glyphosate posed little risk to human health. However, increasing scientific evidence now suggests otherwise.
Mechanism of Action and Environmental Persistence
Glyphosate inhibits the production of vital proteins in plants by targeting the shikimic acid pathway. As a result, plants exposed to glyphosate typically die within a few days.
Soil Half-Life: Glyphosate’s half-life in soil ranges from 2 to 280 days, depending on environmental conditions. Its primary metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), can persist even longer up to 958 days.
Water Contamination: Repeated agricultural use has led to concerns about groundwater and marine contamination, with studies indicating glyphosate can remain in seawater for up to 315 days.
Potential Human Health Impacts
Neurological Effects
Research indicates that glyphosate can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially affecting the human nervous system.
Case Studies: In Uganda, farmers exposed to glyphosate reported visual impairments. Additional studies have confirmed that glyphosate can reach the brain and cause damage.
Biochemical Markers: One study investigated serum S100B protein which is marker of central nervous system (CNS) injury. The study involved 40 patients (23 with glyphosate poisoning and 17 with glufosinate poisoning).
The presence of altered consciousness and seizures correlated with elevated S100B levels, suggesting neurological complications linked to glyphosate exposure.
Genotoxic and Cellular Effects
Glyphosate has been shown to cause DNA damage in human cells:
Induces single and double-strand DNA breaks.
Increases oxidative stress via elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS).
Disrupts DNA repair mechanisms and cell cycle regulation, contributing to genomic instability.
Furthermore, glyphosate may act as a glycine analogue, integrating into proteins during synthesis and disrupting critical cellular processes such as:
Insulin signaling
One carbon metabolism (DNA replication & DNA repair)
Fatty acid release
Cell cycle control (link to cancer)
These disruptions may be linked to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism spectrum disorder, asthma, infertility and cancer.
Glyphosate and Gut Health
Microbiome Disruption
Glyphosate exposure has been associated with gut dysbiosis, particularly the reduction of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These microbes are essential for:
Producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate, propionate, and butyrate
Maintaining gut-brain axis health
Synthesizing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine
SCFA Deficiency and pH Imbalance
An animal study found that glyphosate exposure increased fecal pH, creating an environment unfavorable to SCFA-producing bacteria. This change may:
Reduce SCFA levels
Promote inflammation
Weaken gut barrier integrity
Contribute to mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression
The reduction in SCFAs also affects immune modulation, energy production, and the prevention of diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer.
Glyphosate and Cancer Risk
Multiple studies, including meta-analyses, have linked glyphosate-based herbicide exposure to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in humans. In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) reclassified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans," underscoring the urgency of reassessing its safety.
Conclusion
While glyphosate continues to play a major role in modern agriculture, a growing body of research suggests that its widespread use may have serious implications for human health and the environment.
From its ability to damage DNA and disrupt brain function to its impact on the gut microbiome and potential role in chronic disease development, glyphosate’s safety profile warrants thorough reassessment.
Regulatory agencies and the scientific community must prioritize comprehensive, long-term studies to evaluate the risks associated with glyphosate exposure and ensure appropriate public health safeguards are in place.
