Calcium Supplement - The Double-Edged Sword
For decades, we are preached to take calcium supplements every day to build bones and prevent osteoporosis but studies suggested excess calcium could stiffen heart arteries.
A population-based observational cohort study that followed the participants over 11 years showed that calcium supplementation can increase the risk of heart attack.
A meta-analysis study that involved 36,282 postmenopausal women concluded that calcium supplements with or without vitamin D modestly increase the risk of heart attack.
Another study that had 5,448 adults who did not have heart disease were followed up for 10 years. The participants filled out questionnaires about their diet and vitamin supplementation. They underwent CT scan 10 years later to see if there were any calcification of the heart. The results showed that calcium supplement may increase the risk for coronary artery calcification which mean artery blockage in the heart.
