Can Solar Storms Trigger Heart Attacks?
The Surprising Research Behind Solar Flares, Cosmic Rays, and Heart Disease Risk
Solar Activity and Heart Health
Recent research has examined the potential influence of geomagnetic and cosmic activity on cardiovascular health. Specifically, researchers have investigated whether changes in Earth's magnetic environment caused by solar and cosmic events can increase the incidence of heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions. The purposes is to understand the biological and environmental interactions that may contribute to cardiovascular risk.
Solar Activity and Heart Attack Risk
A retrospective study analyzed 11,026 hospital admission cases of acute myocardial infarction between 2000 and 2009, focusing on days with zero geomagnetic activity (GMA) and high cosmic ray activity (CRA), as well as the subsequent days during different phases of the solar cycle.
Myocardial infarction commonly known as a heart attack occurs when blood flow is reduced or blocked in a coronary artery, leading to damage in the heart muscle. The study found that during periods of high solar activity (2000–2007), zero-GMA days were rare (36 days), but were often followed by a sharp increase in acute myocardial infarction admissions.
In contrast, during low solar activity (2008–2009), there were more zero-GMA days (57 days), which often occurred in clusters. Across the entire solar cycle, the study observed a gradual rise in AMI cases 1 to 2 days after a zero-GMA day, with a notable peak on day 6. These findings suggest that a period of geomagnetic calm combined with high CRA may increase heart attack risk, depending on the solar cycle phase.
Global Impact of Geomagnetic Disturbances on Cardiovascular Disease
Another large scale retrospective study examined the relationship between geomagnetic factors and cardiovascular mortality across 204 countries from 1996 to 2019. The study found a significant connection between geomagnetic disturbances and increased mortality from cardiovascular disease and stroke.
This effect appeared to be latitude dependent, with higher cardiovascular risks observed in countries closer to the poles, where geomagnetic disturbances are more intense. Interestingly, horizontal geomagnetic fields which are strongest near the equator were negatively correlated with cardiovascular events.
Vertical magnetic fields are stronger near the poles were positively correlated to increase risk of cardiovascular events. These findings imply that both the strength and orientation of the geomagnetic field can influence cardiovascular health outcomes

Mechanisms: How Geomagnetic Activity May Affect the Heart
Several theories have been proposed to explain how geomagnetic disturbances might affect the cardiovascular system. One key mechanism is the disruption of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which regulates heart rate, blood pressure, and stress responses.
Exposure to changing magnetic fields may decrease heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of reduced autonomic flexibility and increased cardiovascular risk. Another proposed mechanism involves melatonin, a hormone that regulates circadian rhythms and has antioxidant properties. Geomagnetic activity may reduce melatonin production, potentially increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and arrhythmias.
Researchers also suggest that the human body may be able to detect magnetic changes through a light-sensitive and magnetic detection system, which includes cryptochrome proteins in the eyes and magnetite-containing cells.
Overstimulation of this system could disrupt the balance between sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) responses, leading to decreased HRV. Reduced melatonin production may further exacerbate cardiovascular vulnerability by impairing sleep and antioxidant defenses.
Interactions with Air Pollution
Research has also indicated that geomagnetic activity may amplify the harmful effects of air pollution on cardiovascular health. In particular, strong geomagnetic disturbances have been shown to enhance the cardiovascular impact of common air pollutants such as PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), black carbon (BC), and ultrafine particles. This suggests that environmental stressors can interact in complex ways to increase cardiovascular risk.
Blood Pressure Response to Geomagnetic Storms
In a separate clinical study, 86 volunteers were monitored for changes in blood pressure and heart rate during periods of increased geomagnetic activity. Measurements were taken three days before and after geomagnetic storms.
The study found that both systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly increased from the day before to two days after the storm, providing additional evidence of the physiological effects of geomagnetic disturbances.
Conclusion
These studies demonstrated that geomagnetic and cosmic activity may influence cardiovascular health. Key findings include increased heart attack admissions following zero-GMA days, higher cardiovascular mortality associated with geomagnetic disturbances particularly near the poles, and physiological responses such as elevated blood pressure and reduced heart rate variability.
Additionally, geomagnetic activity may interact with environmental pollutants to further heighten cardiovascular risk. While the exact biological mechanisms remain under investigation, these findings underscore the importance of considering space weather as a potential factor in cardiovascular health and public health planning.

Another possibility to explain correlation is that people who already have cardiovascular issues may have pacemakers. Pacemakers are charged wirelessly, which means they receive power the same way a cellular phone can be charged without a hard connection. Also, EMF's are known to affect pacemakers; a person with a pacemaker cannot be a mechanic, and certain machinery carries a warning for such personnel to keep a suitable distance.
